Life on our planet owes its existence to a middle-aged sun which receives nothing in return for its accidental gift. Perhaps, one day, our species—or some other species—will discover a means to keep the aged sun’s fading light forever stoked and, in this way, repay life’s extraordinary debt. The sun’s debt to gravity, I fear, may go forever unpaid.
