“Evil Dead: The Musical?” Text can’t adequately convey the incredulity expressed by this question. I suspect I am not the only one who uttered this question when first hearing about the show. Could it really work? As a musical? Seriously. Really? Come on?
Last night, I went to see Evil Dead: The Musical for the first time and Sock “n” Buskin Theatre Company, in association with Erudite Theatre, have put together a rock solid show. They ably demonstrate that the concept works and is a whole lot of fun. I didn’t see the Toronto run, so I can’t compare it to that, but in terms of good time value for dollar, this really can’t be beat. If nothing else, it’s worth going just for the fun of being part of an audience who is totally onside with a show from beginning to end. I don’t get the obsession with the Evil Dead franchise and am not a huge fan of musicals but I enjoyed this production. Recommended.

I saw this in Toronto at the Fringe festival years ago – I also recommend.

I’m a year late in commenting, but back in 1995 I saw a local Auckland production of “Brain Dead: The Musical.” “Brain Dead” is a fairly well-known New Zealand zombie film by Peter Jackson, and the musical version was written at the same time as the original film (but produced about a decade later). The script introduces a host of new ideas into the story and the songs, whilst not brilliant, were entertaining.
It’s also the only show I’ve been to where they sprayed fake blood into the audience quite deliberately (the tickets did warn the audience of that).

Hor! New comments on old posts are always welcome. Thanks!
Ah, Peter Jackson. Fine proof that anything is possible in this world if you chase a passion in good faith. Those early films always make me shake my head in incredulity and wonder aloud: they gave THIS guy the biggest film project ever. THIS guy.
