Because circumstances change, the best solution to a problem at the present time may not be the best solution at a later time and it may not have been the best solution at an earlier time; old solutions and problems can become irrelevant, old solutions can become problems, and new problems can arise.
The Most Important Idea Ever. Seriously.

High School Über Alles
18 01 20091. Statistically-speaking, the population of a typical high-school is a representative sample of the community in which it is located.
2. Accordingly, the persons and behaviors encountered there are normally representative of the community in which the high school is located.
3. It seems (although, I know of no formal study) there are significant similarities concerning the kinds of persons and behaviors encountered in most high schools.
4. Therefore, it can be predicted that the kinds of persons and behaviors encountered in high school are representative of the kinds of behavior one will always encounter in life.
5. In some circumstances, as persons age, they have more opportunity to select and determine which persons they interact with directly on a regular basis and, for this reason, some kinds of persons and behaviors may be encountered less often, but they are, nevertheless, still likely to exist in the general population.
6. I would have preferred to realize this earlier in life but am pleased to know it now.

A Strawberry Moment
25 12 2008If, by chance or on purpose, you need to spend the night near the Miami International Airport, I recommend the following. First, flag-down a free shuttle to the Runway Inn. The room I had for $55 + taxes was a good size, clean and the in-room air-conditioning was hard-working. No ID required, if you pay cash. There’s free Wifi in the lobby, if you need to let someone know that you missed your flight. The shower was hot, there were plenty of clean towels, and the bed was comfortable. After a quick shower and a change of clothes, head to the nearby Patio Tipico. It is only a few feet way and it specializes in Honduran food. The food is delicious and huge–I had the Honduran chicken–the beer is cheap and cold, the waitresses lovely, and the ambience great. The jukebox plays a lot of Eagles. Order a beer and some food. Order another beer when the food arrives and eat a lot of the spicy onions that come in a jar along side the tabasco sauce. A third beer is optional but highly recommended. Watch the Miami Heat beat Golden State. Flirting with the waitresses is also optional but thinking about the possibility of it will be inevitable. Practice your Spanish before you go.

Keeping the Glass Half-full is Hard Work
19 12 20081. Getting and maintaining a positive attitude, especially when a person does not already have it, takes a lot of hard work, effort, time, and diligence. A person doesn’t become positive by flipping an internal switch when someone suggests the glass is half-full rather than half-empty. A positive attitude is a kind of skill that a person acquires and develops over time through practice and effort. A person must decide to acquire the skill, work on developing it everyday, and, only then, will she eventually employ it effortlessly.
2. A positive person never–never–ignores negative experiences. Instead, a positive person recognizes a negative thought, outcome, circumstance, and/ or event and responds to it in a positive fashion. In some instances, the decision not to dwell on some negative aspect of one’s life is the best response but it is not always the best response and, when circumstances change, it may cease to be the best response.
3. Many persons lose site of–or are unaware of–these two facts and, as a result, are unable to adopt a genuinely positive attitude in their lives.

An Important Discovery. October 2008. A Sunday. Nine-ish.
17 12 20081. Other persons, despite some similarities, are not like me. I am unlikely to make proper sense of a person’s understanding of the world (unexpressed or otherwise), her intentions, or her behavior, if I assume it is always like or identical to my own. It is possible to make sense of another person’s understanding of the world, her intentions, or her behavior but I must do so on terms which make sense to her and those terms may change over time and in different circumstances.
2. If a person acts in an unexpected fashion, given the circumstances as I understand and experience them, I should not immediately assume she has reasoned poorly, has false beliefs, or is being duplicitous. Instead, I should try to understand the circumstances as she understands and experiences them and assess her behavior from that perspective. If, from this light, her behavior is still unexpected, I can then assess whether or not she has reasoned poorly, employed false beliefs, or is being duplicitous.
3. Few other people have made this important discovery or they fail to apply it in day to day life.

The Ascension (Revised)
26 11 2008Life on our planet owes its existence to a middle-aged sun which receives nothing in return for its accidental gift. Perhaps, one day, our species—or some other species—will discover a means to keep the aged sun’s fading light forever stoked and, in this way, repay life’s extraordinary debt. The sun’s debt to gravity, I fear, may go forever unpaid.

Fuck you, Shakespeare, et al.
26 11 2008Every instance of successful language-use is well-suited to a particular circumstance and a particular end or, perhaps, a few circumstances and a few ends. The durability and communicability of language allows particular instances of it to be accessible to many persons and, because of this, any particular instance of language often seems intended for any number of circumstances and ends. When an instance of language seems relevant to many or even all circumstances, it is an indication of the adaptive capacities of a person or persons and of the relations between persons, rather than some feature of the instance of language itself or the person who first used the instance of language successfully.
